I absolutely loved this movie. It very different and kind of "out there", but it just worked and ended up being a good movie.
"The toothed vagina appears in the mythology of many and diverse cultures all over the world. In these myths, the story is always the same. The hero must do battle with the woman. The toothed creature can break her power."
Teeth is a contemporary low-budget horror movie featuring an unusual twist. Where Hostel, Saw and several other modern horror movies flaunt murders attributed to twisted serial killers, director Mitchell Lichtenstein manages to avoid the genre stereotypes, offering something different and innovative. On the surface it appears to be a horror film based on an ancient legend of the 'Vagina Dentata', but it's also a coming-of-age story and an insightful social commentary on contemporary perspectives of sex. Teeth has been much discussed since its premiere at the Sundance, gaining much notoriety. Since its initial premiere, the film has gathered a few loyal fans as well as the inevitable number of haters. By no means is this a terrible film...however in no way is this a horror masterpiece. Despite the elevated originality, it's hard to overlook the thin plot and the film's frequent descent into stupidity and silliness.
Dawn (Weixler) is an attractive high school virgin and a devoted component of her local chastity club. Similar to most modern teenage girls, Dawn strictly adheres to a vow of abstinence - i.e. she will remain a virgin until marriage. Dawn finds it difficult to remain focused on her vow with stepbrother Brad's (Hensley) inappropriate behaviour, not to mention the fact that Brad has sexual desires for Dawn. Little does Dawn realise that she's a living representation of the 'Vagina Dentata' - this literally means that she possesses a set of sharp, dangerous mutant teeth in her vagina. After her supposedly likeminded boyfriend forces himself upon her...the vagina begins chomping and her boyfriend's death is the outcome. This is just the beginning as this powerful tale of female empowerment only grows increasingly twisted and disturbing.
Teeth was marketed as a horror/comedy hybrid. The film could only work as a cross between horror and comedy, simply because no-one will ever take the concept seriously. And as a comedy...the horror scenes are too ghastly and difficult to stomach for someone searching for a straightforward comedy.
Director Mitchell Lichtenstein proves competent behind the camera with a limited budget. He is aware of how preposterous the concept is, so he inserts some subtle dark humour. Many of the "chomping" scenes are hilarious beyond all belief. Just the noise of a set of teeth between Dawn's legs... munching on a man's joy department...it will have you in fits of laughter. I must give kudos to Lichtenstein for not following the B-Grade horror path. If it was totally B-Grade, and he was proud of it, we probably would have seen a giant vagina monster with teeth...salivating and laughing in sinister ways. Who knows how cool that could have been, or how much of a travesty it could have been.
Considering the low-budget origins, the acting on offer isn't too bad. It's Jess Weixler's show as she's the one with the mutant vagina. Jess is well-nuanced as she conveys necessary humour, ambivalence and self-doubt in her portrayal. John Hensley isn't too bad as Dawn's brother from hell. On the other hand, acting from some of the other cast members is quite atrocious. The gynaecologist in particular sounds contrived and unrealistic. Not to mention a few school children extras who look as if they've just endured a monotonous multiple-day lecture on politics. For your typical low-budget Sundance feature, the sub-par acting is generally to be expected.
Teeth has a few jolts, jumps and unpredictable twists up its sleeve. It's a grave disservice to the filmmakers to dismiss the film based solely on its premise. If you're one of those people, then the movie probably isn't for you anyway. At no point is it difficult to believe the premise due to the realistic prosthetic effects and the haunting noises. For an indie feature, the acting is standard but the director should be proud of his efforts. It sometimes follows the horror template while also being a potent commentary on abstinence and the growing restrictions. The film is marred overwhelmingly by its temptation to become very silly and stupid, sometimes preposterous, as well as unconvincing acting playing its part.
About a girl with sharp teeth in her vagina who attacks and bites anyone or anything who invades her vagina. power ,man! super original story. but it stems from a legend of vagina dentata
flippin' flip flip freaky! simple story, but worth the watch! women empowerment to the max! hahahaha!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
when she said "Oh, shit.." while she was on top of some guy
it was so very precious!
well, bad bad boys need to learn the hardest way sometimes...
my suggestion :
SERIOUSLY, DON'T TAKE THIS MOVIE TOO SERIOUSLY.. then, you'll see the 'beauty' of it. :D
A proud virgin discovers she has a particularly nasty way to disarm or should I say 'behead' males! Lots of severed penises (and fingers!) and male viewers squirming in their seats! Well, sex IS a weapon...
Brad: I think she bit it.
Melanie: She who?
Brad: Dawn.
Melanie: A baby bit into your finger?
A cringe inducing movie that wildly mixes dark comedy, horror, teen angst, and even elements of a superhero origin story.
Jess Weixler stars as Dawn, a high school girl who, at the start of the film, is known for supporting the cause of waiting for marriage before having sex with another. However, she has other problems lurking within her own body.
Unbeknown to her and only finding out during a test of her chastity, Dawn learns that a certain myth involving a toothed vagina is true. She has a power inside her that no man should ever mess with.
The story also involves Dawn's family life, which includes her sick mother and step brother who has a secret passion for her.
The family subplot hurts this movie, but the very concept is so cringe inducing that its hard to enjoy as it is. The main problem is how to manage a tone for this kind of movie. There are moments when the music cues and dialog scream b-movie, but then other scenes are so seriously handled that its just too much.
This being said, the movie is fairly entertaining just for being about what it is.
Dawn: Vagina dentata. It's what inside's me. The doctor said so. A hero has to come and conquer them!
Original exploration of teen sexual awakening played in a slightly mismatched comedy - horror style. The heightened reality feel drains the emotional impact - I think it would have made an interesting subject for a realistic straight horror in the style of early Cronenberg.
A great black comedy that has its tongue firmly in its cheek. For some reason every guy in this movie is a molester/rapist/arsehole,and our poor heroine deals with them all in a very unusual yet affective way. This wont please everyone, but if you watch it with an open mind and see it as a black comedy/horror,and not take it seriously,no reason why you wont enjoy it.
well the idea of a vagina with teeth is quit funny, and scarry for guys xD but this doesn't hold unfortunately...
Though the film scares the shit out of men I mean a Vagina that can bite is terrifying. The film is pretty boring but the girl is a good actress. The film was decent.
Maybe I waited too long to see this, or maybe I had read too much hype about it, but I was a bit let down. Honestly, the concept of a gal with a full set of teeth down there made me roll my eyes, and I had doubts going in. It's not a badly done film and the lead actress does an incredible job for such a ridiculous role, but after about half way in, it just starts to feel redundant. Consequently the sight of severed male genetalia does not have the impact that it probably should anymore...
Woa. This movie gets right up in your face. The premise of the story is perfect... a girl with a toothed vagina... well, what else do you do with a teethed vagina? Hmmm... So it's actually a pretty righteous feminist style movie. Wonderful casting, as well as acting. A highly entertaining watch.
Its decent enough to paa some time but alot more could've went into this the actings bad and the storys kinda weak.
I really liked the premise, but the actual story was a little weak. I think a lot more could have been done with this one.
nice idea for a movie. the fact is... an idea is useless if developed in a dumb way (remember Hostel?).
Something about this movie really charmed me in ill have to admit. It is a very odd film and it has some very wild moments and some nonsense just plain crazy moments, but over all i found myself with a smile most the time.
It is very painful to watch (for a guy),a movie about a vagina that has teeth.
But this movie supposed to be a horror??
Oh well in few words I was falling asleep watching it.
Original story about a girl with a knob gobbling vag...yeah, her vag has teeth...and oddly enough she is the leader of a pro-virginity cult. These are probably the worst actors ever. You might like it if you watch it while you are under the influence of something.
With its combination of dark humor mixed in with a pinch of Horror, "Teeth" is reckoned to be one of the most intriguing films of the year
Its a amazing horror thriller a little... no well alot of sexual scences, lots of blood and gore very graphic not for the faint hearted but thats what the movie is about you cant take it away otherwise it wont be a movie at all but show this to your kids and you get them not to have sex for a long time!
Oh Lord,What in the world did I just sit through!?!? If you guys are looking for a horror flick don't bother this was so dumb.So lame,A complete waste of time. The only kick ass part is that this chick has one powerful weapon of mass destruction at her disposal at any time, very cool.Otherwise the movie was crap
Sorry to shoot down your (admittedly weak) argument here, but it can't really be described as clever or original... There was a japanese movie that came out in 2005 called "sexual parasite" which was incredibly similar to this one... Also, once the film gets it's "hard hitting" material in, it seems to just repeat this over and over again rather than thinking of something fresh to capture audience's attention. Poor at best.
I'm surprised to see so many mediocre reviews!
This movie is hilarious and damn brilliant! You gotta watch it with the right state of mind I guess... or perhaps you need to get your head out of your puritan ass and appreciate something that actually has originality in a period where all new movies are either remakes, sequals or fucking prequals ;)
THIS MOVIE RULES! 9/10 !!!
I did like the second half of the film because it drags in the beginning & the dialog don't seems to be that interesting.Once the movie gets to the twisted & perverse side of the tale of Dawn who have a vagina that has teeth which castrates men during sex then it becomes interesting. This is the type of film that will make you laugh & squirm at the same time.Original, provocative, wicked & gruesome film with a touch of humor.

As she struggles to comprehend her anatomical uniqueness, Dawn experiences both the pitfalls and the power of being a living example of the vagina dentata myth.
