The two stars I'm giving this movie are solely for the first 30-40 minutes. It starts off promisingly, with great moments mocking the sci-fi B-movies of the 1950s. And "Time Warp" might be one of the most bizarrely funny thing ever in musicals. Tim Curry's entrance is bizarre, but distinctive and memorable. But then the plot begins to descend into madness and it becomes interesting as nothing more than an experiment in absurd shock value. The songs remain fairly decent, but the utter crap that is the rest of this movie's plot mean that the first two stars for the first 30 minutes are the ONLY stars this movie is going to get. Too bad, because those first 30 minutes promised something much more substantial than we ended with.

Ok, the movie is crap, but when you see it in a theater with all the people running around it's great

This movie is insane. It's bizarre, random, it changes gears in the last act and features some odd songs throughout. And I LOVE the movie for it.

The movie begins in black and white and becomes colorized at about the time infamous song Time Warp starts up. To me, this is a great set up to compare the lifestyle of Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) before their encounter with Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). They lived relatively normal, bland lives before a fateful turn into the castle of said doctor and their world gets shaken up while in his castle. They do things they only ever thought of doing and see things no human has seen before. Janet seems to embrace this freedom, these new temptations, while Brad would prefer to escape and go back to the way things were (something that reoccurs in the lesser known sequel, Shock Treatment. Yes, there is a sequel, shocking as it seems. Not a direct one though.)

Perhaps I should have started my review by saying that this film is my favorite musical of all time. Well, here it is now. The very nature of this film negates my lack of interest in musicals and the songs themselves are excellent. Time Warp is the one that leaps into most people's minds and it is a jolly good dancing song. The intro Science Fiction Double Feature (my fourth favorite song) is a wonderful intro, filled with references to B-movies from years before, which is the vibe Rocky Horror tries to create. Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a Touch Me gives Susan a chance to shine as she talks about her newfound desire for passionate embrace and her demand of "action" and this would be my favorite if not for Sweet Transvestite. Our introduction to the good doctor, giving us the basic idea that he's just a fun loving guy who loves parties and lives a life of hedonistic pleasure. There's even a nod to the audience with "well you got caught with a flat, well how about that?" in which he looks straight at us, perhaps aware that he is a fictional character. Tim Curry's vocals are outstanding and his delivery of such lines like "I see you shiver with antici.....pation" and "How do you do I, see you you've met my, faithful handyman" just add oomph to a song that had a lot already.
And hey, we have a Meat Loaf song, and that's never a bad thing. Hot Patootie- Bless My Soul is my third favorite song and it's a damn good piece of rock. The eclectic nature of the soundtrack and the B-movie nature are the biggest reasons why this is my favorite musical.

Do I have any gripes? Yes, I do. I would have liked to have seen Columbia get more screen time but then we can't have everything.

Even the little touches are great, such as the reaction of the cast to seeing the corpse of Eddie (Meat Loaf, sorry for the spoiler too by the way) to the scene where everyone repeatedly shouts out each other's names (my favorite non-musical scene, by the way) give this a style of its own.

Should this be remade? While most movies are original and lively on their own merits, some can be remade with no problem and some remakes are controversial right from the announcements. Rocky Horror would definitely fall into the latter category there. We will never see anything as insane and as fun ever again. The fanbase is just so large and involved, Rocky Horror Picture Show could easily be considered the king/queen (with this movie, a mixture of both) of the cult circuit.

One of the only musicals virtually everyone likes, regardless of their affinity for the musical genre itself.

Frankly, I question those that don't like this film.

    Highly recommended.

The songs are catchy, the characters are definitely unique, and the whole movie is a weird, strange mish-mash of pop culture and rock opera. Not a favorite of mine, but it's worth checking out.

When you get beyond the cult following, latex, and screaming profanities at the screen and just look at the Rocky Horror Picture Show you see a sentimental journey into old B-movies. How fitting that this one should be its king (or queen).

The opening song is a trip down memory lane of old sci-fi flicks and their stars leading up to present day. What's striking about RHPS is how it is a representation of the 1970's. Who came first? Frank N. Furter or Ziggy Stardust? Total '70's excess.

But the best way to watch this film is at the theater with a group of people. RHPS is the 1950's B-movie set to 1970's sensibilities and continues to live on beyond the eras it represents.

I was in a live cast as MAGENTA for almost a year back in the day! This is one of my all-time favorite B Movies. I've never seen a man look better in women's under things than Tim Curry...

Fun seeing Barry Bostwick in his whities. I thought of that image when I saw him portray George Washington in the movie of the same name.. Tim Curry was beautiful in drag. Great music, mundane script. I always enjoy watching it.

Pretty harsh, MorpheusOne. Maybe you should give this masterpiece another chance. I don't know anyone who has seen it and not fell in love (a few in lust). I think in the right atmosphere you might like it better. Get some of your friends together, put on some fishnets and party hats and get up and Time Warp with the your fellow Transylvanians. I think you will see the light shining off of those luscious lips and think, "What have I been missing? Thank you jarvismiranda for talking me into reconsidering my views of this delicious film."

I would have given it "0" stars if I could have! This is DEFINITELY one of the worst movies, one of the most OVERATED movies, EVER, in the history of western civilization!

If you like soap opera's and musicals then this piece of garbage is for you. Don't come near me or have anything to do with my gene pool. You should cut off and/or out your sexual organs and don't you dare pollute this world with your seed!

Only fags and freak chicks could enjoy this piece of garbage!!
