I enjoyed this,it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but as a horror movie,it was quite effective. I found myself itching all over once it had finished. It's very gory in places, and you have to leave your brain at the front door. Don't start analyzing it,trying to make sense of it all,it will get you nowhere fast and you will end up with a headache. Just think of it as a dumb horror B movie, and enjoy watching the stupid kids die.
Before seeing this film, I thought maybe some kind of creature or something was down in "The Ruins", but I was wrong.
I still enjoyed the story line. The film did have some good gorey moments in it for the horror lovers out there.
A good mix of psychological thriller and old-school style monster movie chiller.
Suspensful, gory and creepy! While "The Ruins" isn't the best horror flick I've seen recently, it is a really decent one and does deliver some good unexpected scares that gets under your skin and makes it crawl.
"The Ruins" will certainly hold your attention for its 1 1/2 hour runtime. A solid shocking chiller with good effects and an interesting premise.
And I'll never feel the same way about a ringing cellphone again.
Disfruté mucho esta película, de verdad tiene momentos intensos y es original. Lo de la planta maldita tal vez pude parecer tonto, pero en esta película sí funciona bien, no como en otras... (lease The Happening )
This is the most creepy movie I have ever seen - it was really good! It crawled under my skin and it totaly changed my view on plants. Never agian will I own a plant!! I also loved the actors especiallyJena Malone :D
Not the most exciting horror movie. Not much really attention-grabbing or scare you out of your skin horror. This movie is very similar to the movie, the Descent.
Overall, I'm more sad than I am scared. The plot overall was very average. I'm most annoyed at the characters' stupidity and idiocy.
For some reason, I really like the vines and the flowers. Even though they are terrible and murderers, their intelligence and their freaky adaptability of mimicking sounds lured my interest.
A masterful, fast moving but long and big-on-character-development book, is necessarily stripped to the bare essentials for this 90 minute horror flick. The high concept is a lot more believable in written form - here the 'baddie' is signposted too early, is less shocking, and its true intelligence is not as devastating. Nevertheless, The Ruins is mostly a success thanks to four very committed performances (standout Jena Malone is particularly good); you can almost feel the mutual loathing that comes to the surface when the paranoia sets in, and the shocks are very effective with much gruesome bloodletting and some surprisingly funny lines ("well, thank god we cut his legs off"). There's also some interesting 'realism' to some of the characters; knowing in her heart they're all probalby going to die, one of the characters uses some time to quickly wank off her boyfriend. Though never really scary, this is much better than I was expecting. I'm just pissed that the hugely downbeat, nihilistic ending of the books' original is scrapped in favor of something more ambiguous but less memorable.
Good movie but the ending kind of made me mad when i thought she was going to get out scott free and she ended up having the damn plant in her face too!!!!
I thought this was going to be a hokey movie, and it kind of was, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cliche ending.
overall cerita biasa aja...
settingnya banyak di reruntuhan itu, yang keren, ide ttg tanaman yang hidup dan malah bisa masuk ke tubuh manusia.. yang keren lagi adegan potong-potong tubuh... ngeri n takut mo lia, but penasaran...
Another teenage horror movie... True, they are not killed by a raving lunatic with a mask, but by very angry Nature, which loves blood... The constant battle between nature and civilisation... I have to admit that I enjoyed in extras on the dvd more than in the movie itself.
Absolute rubbish, not scary, stupid and un explained story, worst horrer ever. Despite excellent acting
The Ruins crawled under my skin, made my eyes water and my body shake. The Ruins is a serious Horror/Thriller that takes no cheap shots--just scare and psychological scare.
pretty cheesy, i must admit. But, i will say that the special effects in this film are pretty good looking. The 16 year old that i watched it with is now afraid of plants and said he will never go to mexico.
watch out gor the vines, u will see what i mean if u watch.
whatever you do chop the vines down watch it and see what i mean
- When ever U feel like U'd like 2 fall a sleep, then please.....
- Put on the old RUINS movie in that DVD of U'res, lol.
I like monster thrills, especially with unusual monsters. The ending is either a nakedly brazen set-up for a sequel or it's a WTF ?!?!?THE MAKERS ARE MORONS situation, but I gotta say, if you ever found ivy creepy... nice. :o)
Intense and graphic with a different kind of villain. If you are a horror fan, you should like this one.
What happened to the entire horror genre!? They are constantly feeding us shit and obviously somebodies eating it. The acting was pretty decent at parts but it was hard to tell through bad dialogue and crappy storyline.
This movie was completely messed. I was rather laughing because it was hilarious or laughing at the insanity of this film. Completely insane.
I still don't really know what to make of this movie....I mean it's about killer plants, for what it was I guess it was alright, but plants just aren't scarry.
the book was really good, but the movie didn't really capture the theme very well.
i don't recommend this to horror fanatics (like me)
Bad acting & i just didn't like what the "villian" (for lack of a better word) was. I do not recommend this movie to anyone.
The Ruins is a refinement of the detestable The Hills Have Eyes remake, in that it is not particularly scary except by sheer force of gruesome image. This is the kind of movie that you cringe at while watching, which is further amplified by acting that doesn't totally suck. The main doctor guy is bad but he doesn't really have much to do - characters with long, elaborate death scenes go through the motions with surprising vigor. There was definitely some talent attached to this project.
Meh, more later, it's 1 in the morning

the ending wasent crap they had to do it that way to leave the film open to a sequel beaucase if it does more than reasonably ok at the cinema then they will do another beacause there is loads of places they can take the film thank yiou
**Possible Spoilers if you havent seen it yet**
To anyone wondering about the "sacrifice": There was no sacrifice. The tourists thought at one point they were being sacrificed, but as they explained later, the villagers were only forced them to stay there and die becuase they figured once they touched the plants, they were "contaminated" and didn't want it to spread. They want to keep it contained. That's why they mentioned how they salted the earth so the plants couldn't grow out farther, and even animals and birds learned not to go there. The villagers were not evil villains, they were simply protecting themselves and the rest of the jungle.
p.s. the only problem I have is with the ending - very quick and anti-climactic
Anyone who thinks this was boring isn't looking for a scary movie, they just want gore. It's nice to see a horror flick that doesn't rely on cheap scares or over-the-top gore and kills. The Ruins instead opts for a much more effective slowly growing sense of fear and dread. I'll take something like this over the entire Saw and Hostel series any day.
And ya gotta give it credit for not watering down for a PG13 like so many lame horror flicks these days.
The film delivers several creepy & gory moments that are very effective besides some great performances by the cast. What i didn't get was a good explanation related to the sacrifice & a ending that was totally a disappointment but other that,it was a enjoyable & gruesome horror film.
